چکیده

An extended nite element method (X-FEM) for three-dimensional crack modelling is described. A discontinuous function and the two-dimensional asymptotic crack-tip displacement elds are added to the nite element approximation to account for the crack using the notion of partition of unity. This enables the domain to be modelled by nite elements with no explicit meshing of the crack surfaces. Computational geometry issues associated with the representation of the crack and the enrichment of the nite element approximation are discussed. Stress intensity factors (SIFs) for planar three-dimensional cracks are presented, which are found to be in good agreement with benchmark solutions. Copyright ? 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Brittle fracture in polycrystalline microstructures with the extended nite element method

A two-dimensional numerical model of microstructural e ects in brittle fracture is presented, with an aim towards the understanding of toughening mechanisms in polycrystalline materials such as ceramics. Quasi-static crack propagation is modelled using the extended nite element method (X-FEM) and microstructures are simulated within the framework of the Potts model for grain growth. In the X-FE...

Extended Finite Element Method ( X - Fem ) for Two - and Three - Dimensional Crackmodelingn

The nite element method is now well established as a robust and reliable numerical technique in many areas of solid mechanics. There are however problems where the use of the nite element method is cumbersome like the modeling of moving discon-tinuities due to the need to update the mesh to match the geometry of the discontinuity. Even for stationary cracks, in three-dimensional solids, contsru...

A generalized ®nite element method for the simulation of three- dimensional dynamic crack propagation

This paper is aimed at presenting a partition of unity method for the simulation of three-dimensional dynamic crack propagation. The method is a variation of the partition of unity ®nite element method and hp-cloud method. In the context of crack simulation, this method allows for modeling of arbitrary dynamic crack propagation without any remeshing of the domain. In the proposed method, the ap...

A two dimensional Simulation of crack propagation using Adaptive Finite Element Analysis

Finite element method (FEM) is one of the most famous methods which has many applications in varies studies such as the study of crack propagation in engineering structures. However, unless extremely fine meshes are employed, problem arises in accurately modelling the singular stress field in the singular element area around the crack tip. In the present study, the crack growth simulation has b...
